Welcome to the Smart Art Business Podcast. Hosted by art business coach Rachel Wilkins, the Smart Art Business Podcast was created to help visual artists and creative entrepreneurs grow and sustain a successful business. Featuring tangible advice and inspiring interviews with artists and industry experts, you will learn how to brand, market, and sell your art the smart way.
In this episode, Rachel speaks with Ola Rondiak, a mixed media contemporary artist and dives deep into the source of her creative inspiration behind her artwork. In recent years she has experimented with sculpture and her creations are inspired by her children’s clothing which carry a lot of symbolic messages. Emotional experiences are noted in all her artwork as her own history is intertwined with Ukrainian history and tradition, preparing the viewer with a rare “contemporary art with a historical conscious”.
Ola Rondiak’s creative inspiration for her paintings is shaped by her family’s experiences living in Ukraine during the historical events and war in Ukraine. Her contemporary “Motanka” sculptures, inspired by ancient Ukrainian rag dolls, serve as a talisman for good health, fortune, and healing. Rondiak’s Neo-Pop sculptures, made from her children’s clothing covered with plaster of paris and old signs or homework papers, are a testament to better times, a notion of passing time and morphing histories.
Rondiak earned her BS degree at Hunter College and is also a psychotherapist. Moreover, her work has been featured internationally at The Maidan Museum and RA Gallery in Kyiv, Ukraine, Tri–Mission Art Gallery in the American Embassy in Rome, Italy and The Ukrainian Institute of America in NYC and also part of permanent collections at select galleries.
In this episode we discuss:
- Life in the day of an artist to increase productivity
- Getting artistic inspiration in revolutionary times in Ukraine
- The level of support of cultural arts in European countries versus America and possible factors influencing their perceptions
- Parallels between psychotherapy and creativity, and how they impact each other
