NAME: Shawn Towne Location: Philadelphia Area, PA
So we’re going to start with the difficult question: sum up your creative process in one word/phrase, and explain why!
“Organized Chaos” I have stuff going on all over the place, and stuff all over the place! I know where everything is! I try to take notes and sketches on things around me that inspire color schemes and movement… flowers, the beach blues, geodes, then ALWAYS add a healthy dose of sparkle and shine! When I have the time to paint, I have the notes to refer back. Did I mention you can never have too much sparkle and shine?!
Were you always an artist, even as a child? What was your path to becoming an artist?
Yes, I have always been an artist with the “artist mentality”. I strayed for a bit but always an artist in my head and my heart. I remember as a child always drawing and coloring. I loved art class in elementary school and participated in local events through the art teacher’s guidance. I was the editor of the yearbook in high school. After graduating from college, I worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world until I started having children. I did freelance while my 3 children were little. I’ve always loved creating things as gifts, but never found the one thing that was it. For the last 10 years, I got into fitness and fitness modeling. It was a crazy fun ride, but the creativity was missing. I designed my own line of workout apparel with original artwork, but something was still missing. Finally, I feel like I have found my niche, and the stars are aligning! I am so excited and happy that I found this path!
What is your medium of choice and what drew you to this particular medium?
I saw a few acrylics pours online and decided to try it. I was drawn to the way the paint moved and the effects it created. I loved that I could add different mediums and get different results. I covered it with resin and had this shiny, sparkly, glass-like piece. I was hooked! I’ve been evolving and progressing from there. There has been and still is, A LOT of trial and error, and A LOT of mess, but there is still SO much going on in my head that I want to try!
Is there any particular experience, person, place or thing that inspires you to create? Tell us about that.
It has been so long since I found something that truly inspires me until now. I am a little obsessive about it right and I love to be in my office any chance I get! For me, the stars have finally aligned. It’s exciting to try different things, see the way the different colors mix, etc. I love ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that sparkles! I would say the colors of nature and movement inspire me. I find I am drawn to the earth tones and jewel tones the most.
What is it like showing your work to people and what do you hope people take away from it?
I love when I show it to people, especially my husband and kids, and they say “WOW”! I have done a few things not at all art related. THIS is something that I love wholeheartedly! I believe in it wholeheartedly and I believe in ME wholeheartedly!! I created these pieces, all me! I am so proud of that and so excited to see where this can take me!
What advice do you have for other artists who may be looking to get their work exhibited?
I am still learning and hoping to be exhibited in a gallery at some point. Social media is a huge help. I have gotten inspiration, and lots of love from the online community just based on things I create. I will keep applying for things, hopefully, someone will cross my path that LOVES what I do! I would recommend other artists do the same!
