Welcome to the Smart Art Business Podcast. Hosted by art business coach Rachel Wilkins, the Smart Art Business Podcast was created to help visual artists and creative entrepreneurs grow and sustain a successful business. Featuring tangible advice and inspiring interviews with artists and industry experts, you will learn how to brand, market, and sell your art the smart way.

In this episode, our host, Rachel is in conversation with Colleen on intentional networking within the right circles and how crucial relationships are to success as they bring about unique opportunities. Colleen’s work is inspired by the environment she loves spending with as it ties in with her identity. She is  drawn to creating worlds that explore the power of light to alter our external and internal landscapes.

From Austin, Texas, Colleen Blackard is based in Brooklyn, NY and creates artwork inspired by the light of the Texas skies of her youth. She is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, recently completed a residency at Cill Rialaig Artist Retreat, Co. Kerry, Ireland, and she received a BA from Hampshire College, MA.

Her work has been featured in such venues as ACA Galleries, Owen James Gallery, and Brooklyn Fire Proof. She is represented by Aberson Exhibits in Tulsa, OK. Her drawings are in Pierogi Gallery’s Flat Files and she was interviewed for their artists’ Q&A. Her work has been featured in Drawing Magazine and the Brooklyn episode of the Japanese travel show, Hotel no Madokara.

I am profoundly influenced by my environment, particularly the quality of the light. I am drawn to create worlds that explore the power of light to alter our external and internal landscapes. In all of my work, light is the subject and acts as a vehicle for emotional expression. Universal themes of connection, isolation, and loss are recurrent in my various series and reflect my personal experiences.

In my drawings, I use continuous, circular, intersecting lines to create a luminosity that clarifies the subject and gives life to every detail. Whether in ballpoint pen or archival marker, I am constantly pushing the envelope on the types of atmospheres and effects I can create with these dynamic lines and the light between.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Importance of building a network that can support and critique your work
  • Scaling up your artwork and associated challenges
  • How the art world is responding to the COVID19 pandemic and it’s effects
  • Navigating around the different perceptions brought about by the pandemic (COVID19)
